Windsor Lodge Ranikhet
Windsor Lodge Ranikhet, near Golf Course, Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, India Show on Map
Overview
Windsor Lodge Ranikhet is situated at a lookout atop a wooden mound. Amidst breathtaking views of the Ranikhet Golf Course, dense oak, pine, and cedar forests, and snow-capped Himalayan peaks. With time, it evolved into a favorite getaway for British aristocracy and Indian monarchy looking for a relaxing country vacation. Their Colonial beauty is preserved by six buildings on the property which have been meticulously secured. The interior design is decorated with generously used antique furniture. It is a historical building and Kumaon’s pride.
Windsor Lodge Ranikhet was initially constructed in 1909 as a charming hunting lodge in the middle of a forested area teeming with wildlife. However, during the colonial era, the British upper class and Indian royalty quickly came to favor the lodge as a getaway. Sadly, a terrible fire in 1948 severely damaged the house.
For the next 50 years, Windsor Lodge and its outbuildings were left in a state of disrepair. Indeed, painstaking restoration work didn’t start until 1999, preserving most of the original colonial-style building, recovered woodwork, and roughly hewed stones. The renovation brought back its lively antiquity and former splendor by decorating it with period furniture and artifacts. Six years after its closure, Windsor Lodge Ranikhet reopened its doors.
Hence, several new structures have been constructed to create the blend of colonial opulence and modernity that exists today. It has a 360-degree vista from its hilltop location, gazing out over the golf course, pine and cedar forests, and an incredible panorama of snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Wander Around the City
The city of Windsor Lodge-Ranikhet is filled with some exciting places to visit:
City Walk
There are colonial bungalows scattered across the heavily wooded terrain. These are home to cedar, pine, rhododendron, and oak trees. Expansive gardens encircle the bungalows. The heritage building’s normally crumbling facades are brightened by deep verandas, sloping tin roofs, smoking chimneys, hydrangea shrubs, potted geraniums, fuchsias, and begonias.
Bazaar in Ranikhet
The market is bustling, just as you would expect it to be in a contemporary hill resort. The marketplace is crowded with both locals and visitors.
Temple of Jhuladevi
Goddess Durga’s devoted temple is located here. The lucky recipient returns to pay respects and show appreciation by tying a bell on the temple grounds. There are thousands of bells covering the courtyard which act as a testament to the Goddess’s generosity.
Gardens and Orchards of Chaubatia
The cantonment station contains renowned fruit gardens. The slope orchards are alive with apple, cherry, and plum blossoms in a rainbow of colors in the spring. These bear fruit in the middle and end of the summer.
Lake Bhaley Dunga
The artificial Bhaley Dunga Lake, Ranikhet’s primary water source, is located not far from Chaubatia.
An old church
The town is home to early nineteenth-century churches. Lovely examples of British architecture that serve as continual reminders of Ranikhet’s colonial heritage! Found next to the Som Nath Parade Ground and Nar Singh Stadium.
Museum of the Kumaon Regiment
In-brief a fascinating museum that chronicles the history of the Kumaon Regiment is also located in Ranikhet.
Haidakhan Wale Baba
The ashram and shrine of Haidakhan Wale Baba in Chiliyanola, which is about a 30-minute drive away, is, again, another exciting location to check out.
Golf Course
The well-known KRC Golf Course is a short distance from Windsor Lodge. There are nine “browns” out of the available 18 tees. The golf course itself is a gorgeous span of the gently sloping green. Whistling pines, wonderful valley views, and the Himalayan ranges in the distance make this one of the most scenic golf courses in the world.
Temple Kalika
The Kalika temple, located in the middle of a gorgeous pine and oak tree wood, is perennially just a few hundred meters from Windsor Lodge.
Mankameshwar
The Kumaon Regiment’s jawans restored a contemporary temple dedicated to Lord Ram Krishna and other Gods and Goddesses in Ranikhet.
