Best time to visit Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is open to visitors from 15th November to 15th June. The best time to visit the park is between November and February when the weather is pleasant, however, chances of spotting wildlife in summer are higher. During this time, the park is lush, and the water sources are abundant, making it easier for animals to find water. The temperature during this period ranges from 5°C to 25°C, making it comfortable for tourists to explore the park.

The months of March to June are also excellent times to visit Jim Corbett National Park. During these months, the temperature can go up to 40°C, but it’s still a great time to spot tigers and elephants. The main zones of the park remain closed from June 16 to November 15 during the monsoon season.

Jhirna & Dhela zones are open throughout the year however it is subject to weather conditions in monsoon.

 

Types of Safaris in Corbett     

Jim Corbett National Park is a paradise for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. One way to experience nature to the fullest at Corbett is through a jungle safari. There are three types of safari options that you will find here are as follows:  

  • Jeep Safari:   

Open jeep safari is the most popular safari option. A jeep can accommodate 6 adults and 2 kids at a time. The jeep safaris are conducted twice a day. These safaris are allowed in all zones except for Dhikala Zone. Visitors need to stay in forest rest houses of the Dhikala zone to experience a jeep safari in Dhikala. 

  • Canter Safari:

Yet another immersive experience, the canter safari, conducted and operated by forest officials. These safaris go deep into the wilderness of Jim Corbett. Open roof canter safari can carry a group of 16-18 people. These safaris last for a good five hours and are safe. Canter safaris are only conducted in the Dhikala zone of Corbett National Park. 

  • Elephant Safari:

Although banned in 2018 as per the court’s order, they still function discreetly at the periphery zones of Jim Corbett. This safari can be booked on arrival. Generally, these safaris last for an hour and can be a vivid experience in itself. Do not expect an elephant safari in the forest as these are short rides conducted nearby main roads.

Safari Timings & Prices in Jim Corbett National Park

  • Jeep Safari functions twice a day. In the morning it starts from 6:35 AM to 9:30 AM. In the evening it functions from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. The price for Indians for jungle safari is INR 8000/- per jeep.  The charge per jeep for foreigners is INR 12000/-. The jeep can accommodate a maximum of 6 persons and 2 children.

 

  • Canter Safari also functions twice. In the morning it functions from 6:45 AM to 11:55 AM. In the evening it functions from 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM. On a per-seat basis, the prices are charged. The charges for Indians are INR 2500/person and for foreigners INR 4500/person. 

 

  • Elephant safari. Elephant Safari does not function as per the order of the Hon High Court.

 

How to book a safari in Jim Corbett National Park

There are three different stages of Jim Corbett Safari booking online. Firstly, you need an authorized safari permit which can be booked on the official website of Jim Corbett Safari.

For both, the jeep safari and night stay at the park you need a permit from the official website. After the permit, you will have to book the jeep and guide separately for your safari. Jeeps need to be booked in advance and a guide can be booked on arrival.

What to expect during the Safari ride 

Jim Corbett is truly an ecotourism destination, the park currently has 495 different species of plants and a diverse variety of fauna. The park is home to almost 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species, and 25 reptile species. The deciduous forest contains mainly sal, haldi, peepal, and mango trees. 73% of the park contains forest, while 10% comprises grasslands. 

Jim Corbett National Park is home to more than 280 tigers which makes it a thrilling experience to take a safari ride in the forest.

Things to carry on a Jim Corbett Safari

ID cards of all members travelling (a must for safari booking), Insect Repellents, First aid, and Medicines. Carry a litter bag while entering the park and bring back the non-biodegradable garbage outside.

Do’s:
  • Get your permits well in advance. 
  • You are in the habitat of wild animals, make sure you respect that. 
  • Wear dull colors that match the natural surroundings like khaki and olive green.
Don’ts:

The Wildlife Protection Act governs you on the Corbett Tiger Reserve premises. The requisite rules and regulations are to be followed while on premises.

  • There is a prohibition on carrying firearms.
  • There is a prohibition on smoking and lighting fires.
  • There is a prohibition on playing transistors or tape recorders inside the premises
  • There is a prohibition on entering the restricted zone by visitors.
  •  Shouting, teasing, or attempting to feed animals inside the premise is also a penal offence.
  • Do not carry non-vegetarian food within the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

 

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett National Park 

  • Dhikala Zone

The open period for the zone is from 15th November to 15th June. The entry gate for the zone is Dhangarhi which is about 18km from Ramnagar. The Safari option available here is only the day-canter safari. The Jeep Safari option isn’t available here.

The maximum number of canter safari seats is about 64 seats in each shift. The forest rent houses are as follows: Dhikala FRH, Gairal FRH, Sarpduli FRH, and Sultan FRH.

 

  • Bijrani Zone:

The entry gate for this zone is Amanda gate. It is 2 km from Ramnagar. The open period for the safari tour is from 15th October to 30th June. Safari offered in this zone is the day jeep safari. In one shift maximum of 30 jeeps can function in this zone. The forest rest houses in the zone are Bijrani FRH and Mailani FRH.

 

  • Jhirna Zone:

The entry gate for this zone is Dhela gate which is 15 km from Ramnagar. The open period for safari tours in this zone is throughout the year of weather conditions. The safari offered here is a day jeep safari. The maximum number of jeep safari operating in one shift is 30 jeeps. The forest rest houses are as follows: Jhirna FRH. 

 

  • Dhela Zone:

Safari in this zone operates throughout the year under weather conditions. The safari offered here is the day jeep safari and the maximum number of jeep safaris in one shift is around 15 jeeps. 

 

  • Durga Devi Zone:

The entry gate for this zone is at Durga Devi Gate which is 28 km from Ramnagar. Safari in this zone functions from 15th November to 15th June. Day jeep safari functions in this zone and the maximum number of jeep safaris operating in one shift is 11. Lohachaur FRH is the forest rest house.

 

  • Garjiya Zone:

The entry gate for this is Amdanda Gate which is 9 km. from Ramnagar. The exit gate is at Garjiya gate. The open period for the safari tour is from 15th November to 30th June. In the morning and evening the safari functions. The maximum is limited by the directions of forest officials at Jim Corbett owing to it being recently added.

The forest rest house functions at Garjiya and Malani FRH. The beautiful landscapes make this zone known. It also happens to be one of the most tiger-reach areas. 

 

  • Phato Zone:

The entry gate is at Phato gate which is 26 km. from Ramnagar and the exit gate is at Phato gate. The safari tour operates from 15th November to 30th June in this zone. The safari is offered both in the morning and evening.

The maximum number of jeeps in two shifts can be maximum 50. Tree house stay is available in this zone which makes this zone very desirable. This zone is known for its diverse wildlife. 

 

  • Sitabani Zone:

The entry gate is near Teda village and the exit gate is at Paulgarh gate. This zone is approximately 4 km from Ramnagar. This zone is open for safari all year round and the safaris offered in the zone include both day jeep safari and day elephant safari. There is no limit on the maximum number of jeep safari in this zone. In this zone, you will find a few hotels and resorts which function privately.
